Exploring the Versatility of Tigris® Cylinders

Access2 door cylinder Lets work together

Cylinders are a fundamental component of any locking system, performing the basic task of securing doors. However, the details of their design and construction can provide a range of additional features and benefits, enhancing security and functionality in various environments. The Tigris® range of cylinders offers several innovative options, each tailored to meet specific needs and applications.

Enhanced Features of Tigris® Cylinders

The Tigris® range is designed to cater to diverse requirements, offering several key features that enhance their functionality and security:

Tigris® Premier 3 star Cylinders

CLUTCH FUNCTION

The clutch function is a critical feature for facilities that prioritize safety and control. When a key is inserted, it disengages the thumb turn operation, giving the keyholder priority over locking and unlocking. This feature is particularly useful in facilities for vulnerable individuals, as it prevents someone from holding the door locked by gripping the thumb turn on the inside. This ensures that authorized personnel can always gain access in emergencies or situations requiring immediate intervention.

CLASSROOM FUNCTION

A specialized variant of the clutch function, the classroom function ensures controlled access in educational settings. While the key operation remains standard, the thumb turn can only be used to unlock the door. This design ensures that once a door is locked with a key, it cannot be re-locked from the inside using the thumb turn, providing an extra layer of security and control in classrooms and similar environments.

CONSTRUCTION CYLINDER

The construction cylinder is an innovative solution for managing access during the construction phase of a project. Contractors can install and use the cylinder with a Construction Key, facilitating ease of access during the building process. Once the project is complete, and a valid system key is used, the internal pinning arrangement alters, rendering the Construction Keys unusable. This feature ensures that security is maintained from the moment the building is handed over to the owner.

Preparing School Locking Strategies for Martyn’s Law

Martyn’s Law, introduced to improve security in public spaces, is prompting schools and other organisations to re-evaluate their locking strategies. With safety under greater scrutiny, it’s important for facility managers and school administrators to understand the options available and ensure their buildings are prepared. Classroom vs Clutch Cylinders: What You Need to Know With the introduction of Martyn’s Law, building locking strategies—particularly in education and public spaces—are coming under greater scrutiny. One area often overlooked is the difference between Classroom and Clutch lock functions. In a barricade situation, a Clutch Cylinder allows a keyholder to override the internal thumbturn from outside, whilst still allowing the door to be locked from inside the room. This helps maintain control of the space while preventing unauthorised access. Traditionally, many educational buildings have used Classroom Function, but in certain situations a Clutch Function may provide a more appropriate solution. How Access2 Can Help At Access2, we can help convert Classroom cylinders to Clutch Function without affecting the existing master key system. This means schools can upgrade their locking strategy quickly and efficiently, ready for the next term or planned refurbishment.
